In the past century the means and methods to design and build infrastructure have evolved at an ever increasing rate. Yet timeless lessons may still be gained from the builders of the Great Projects the Brooklyn Bridge, the Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Panama Canal. Veteran builder and award winning civil engineering historian Paul Giroux shares his unique perspective and motivates his audience with timeless lessons from the builders of the Great Projects. Learning Objectives Understand the challenges of designing and building the Great Projects. Identify lessons from the Great Builders that are still relevant to modern practice. Identify the key traits of the builders of the Great Projects. Speaker Raymond Paul Giroux, Dist. M. ASCE,Senior Engineer, Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. MDT Design Thinking Green Infrastructure Performance. Using a series of representative projects, this session will take a case study approach to evaluating the design, construction, and maintenance of green infrastructure systems. This presentation will help the designers decide not only when to use LID principles but also get them focused on the end user to improve the green infrastructure functionality and performance. Free Trial Keylogger Remote Installation. Learning Objectives Learn how to design water quality systems to meet the end users maintenance capabilities, reducing the risk associated with BMP premature failure. Incorporate resilience and sustainability into stormwater management design. Learn about maintenance challenges of green infrastructure and how to reduce long term maintenance costs. Speakers Anthony Kendrick, ENV SP,Green Infrastructure Specialist, Construction Eco. Services Jenny Snape, P. E. ,Managing Partner, Batture, LLCPD Tools to Ensure Effective Preparation Testimony as an Engineering Professional. Litigation in connection with engineering projects and services continues to be on the rise. Preparation is key to successfully offering deposition andor trial testimony. E., DEE,Senior Engineer, GHD Services. SP Prepare to Be Connected Southern Nevada Connected Vehicle Projects. This presentation will discuss the planning elements for a Connected Vehicle CV project and how to implement it with the systems engineering process. It will discuss some tools that are available for CV project planning and system engineering. Connected Vehicles offer a myriad of applications that can be applied to both the vehicles and infrastructure. The session will present a vision of where CV started, what is being done nationally, and where it is going, and will discuss some of the hurdles that must be addressed in deploying CV projects. Learning Objectives Gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the past and future technological advancements in Connected and Automated Vehicles that are paving the way to a new era of personal mobility, big data, and connected cities. Gain insight into the future of public transportation, state DOTs, and private industry and their role in an interconnected transport system. Learn of new and exciting activities being researched and piloted around the United States. Speaker Alyssa Rodriguez, P. E., PTOE, City Traffic Engineer, City of Henderson Brian Hoeft,Director. Freeway and Arterial System FAST of Transportation for the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada RTCSNSTI The Growing Practice of Highway Removals. As highways in U. S. cities reach the end of their useful lives, cities are considering their design options for these facilities rebuild the highways, or replace them with urban infrastructure such as boulevards andor connected networks of streets, which support a broad range of city functions and activities. The past 6. 0 years have shown the negative effects of highways on cities to be greater than the potential for enticing suburban residents to the city for jobs, shopping, and cultural events. Instead, highways disrupted the existing street grid and severed local commercial activity from customers. They enticed many businesses and people to relocate outside the city in car oriented strip development and low density housing developments, which resulted in high maintenance costs, environmental degradation, and impaired public health. Some cities are choosing to remove highways with good success. This session provides attendees with information on the difference between highway removals and highway mitigation and the types of problems that each may solve. The session will be organized into three sections first, an overview of the different types of highway removals and mitigation strategies and the types of problems they solve second, examples of highway removals and third, research comparing the purported benefits of highways in cities to what their social, economic, and environmental impacts were in reality. Learning Objectives Understand the infrastructure and policy options for aging highways and become familiar with the types of highway removals and mitigation strategies and how they solve the micro and macro problems related to highways in cities. Understand the difference between measures of effectiveness MOEs that support highways in cities e. MOEs that support urban infrastructure by addressing safety, placemaking and identity, fiscal responsibility, sustainability, average trip length, vehicle miles traveled reduction, economic health, and inclusivity. Understand the real effects of highways on transportation, neighborhoods, and economic vitality in cities. Speakers Ian Lockwood, P. E. ,Livable Transportation Engineer, Toole Design Group Jeremy Chrzan, P. E., PTOE, LEED AP, M. ASCE,Senior Engineer, Toole Design Group, LLCMonday, October 9. Sessions during this time will earn 1. PDHsTI New Master Builders and 2. Engineering Teams. The requirements of civil engineering professionals are changing, not only necessitating greater collaboration across disciplines, but also between engineers and fabricators. No longer can a single professional know it all. This session explores two ways in which civil engineering professionals are adapting to these new demands developing teams to leverage the specific expertise of a broad spectrum of technical professionals, and blending fabrication and design.
