What diesel drivers need to know about their DPFHeres what the DPF looks like Picture VauxhallNot many drivers know what a Diesel Particulate Filter DPF is until it costs them serious money. And replacing one can cost 1. Green Flag attends a lot of cars that have broken down with DPF problems and they are caused by one primary factor the DPF is clogged with soot because the driver has ignored the warning lamp. Heres everything you need to know about the DPF dilemma. What is a DPF The Diesel Particulate Filter is in the exhaust system of all diesel powered cars sold new since 2. It is a vital component that is designed to enable cars to pass increasingly tough emissions legislation. The DPFs job is to trap the particles that are caused by the compression ignition combustion process and thereby prevent harmful smoke from being pumped into the atmosphere. How does it work Like any filter, the DPF will gradually get clogged with the soot that it traps. However, the car is designed to clean it by heating this residue up, turning it to ash and expelling it. This happens about every 3. Why it goes wrong. In stopstart traffic, or on short journeys, a regeneration may not get time to complete. This will cause the DPF to block partially and an orange light left will come on in the instrument cluster. Ignore the light and continue driving slowly or in traffic and eventually the engine will lose power and stop. This will prompt a trip to the garage and things will get expensive. And I mean really expensive if the car needs a new DPF, were talking more than 1. What to do if you see the warning light. When the DPF warning lamp comes on check your handbook to see exactly what the one on your diesel looks like its time to take the vehicle on a longer run, preferably on a faster road such as a dual carriageway or motorway. Driving at 4. 0mph or more for 1. DPF to go into regeneration mode and burn off soot which will clear any blockage. How to prevent problems in the first place. Before you buy a car, consider the kind of mileage you do. If most of your miles involve short journeys or sitting in stop start traffic where the car never really gets going, plump for petrol rather than diesel. VILKUS62. DPFSCR disable solution. All In One for version2 trucksCE. VILKUS62. All in one. DPF delete solution for Volvo CE. Theres another good reason for this. Diesel cars are generally more expensive than petrol and because diesel is pricier at the pumps too, you dont see any payback from a diesel cars improved economy unless you do a healthy annual mileage. Why not get rid of the DPF One answer to problems with the DPF might be to remove it altogether. But DPFs are installed for a very good reason they cut pollution so its not a very responsible solution. Usb Driver For Nokia Xl Rm 1030. Also, from February 2. DPF removed is an MOT failure. Despite this, there are still companies advertising on the internet to remove DPFs and do the associated re programming of engine software. Dont be tempted it may well invalidate your warranty as well as making your car dirtier and potentially unroadworthy. I have been getting a lot of phone calls at the shop over the past several months from customers wanting to do a DPF delete. If you are reading this then you have probably tried to find the tuners needed to perform a DPF delete, and you are having a hard time finding them. The options are slim to none now days, but its not the end of the world. Heres what you need to realize. Most customers wanting to do a DPF delete are simply trying to increase fuel economy. Very few are actually worried about performance. There are ways to increase fuel economy without deleting the DPF and EGR systems. Clogged Diesel Particulate Filter. Since our shop is not allowed to perform DPF and EGR deletes we have found ways around the problems commonly associated with factory emissions equipment. These solutions are the same for Ford, Chevy and Dodge I will be referring to a 6. L Cummins we recently did. The main thing that is going to help with fuel economy is Better Fuel Atomization. What causes the poor fuel economy on these newer trucks is the fact that when the DPF becomes clogged the truck has to force a Regen cycle. When your 2. 00. 7 and newer diesel goes into regen mode, the engine is literally using over a gallon of fuel in a matter of minutes. This is going to affect the overall average fuel economy. So the bottom line here is we need to stop the filter from becoming clogged in order to stop the regen cycles. Poor fuel atomization results in heavy soot content which clogs the DPF. So how do we get better fuel atomization Well its easier than you may think, most Diesel Programmers increase fuel pressure, that is the easiest way to increase horse power so we start with a good tuner or programmer because increased rail pressure will result in better atomization. There are a lot of different tuners available on the market, but Edge Products makes an Evolution tuner that we have used a lot and the Evolution will work on all 2. Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks with a DPF. Auto Agent Ez. Lynk which is another excellent choice and they make one part number that fits all 2. Ford Diesel Trucks. Now that we have the required fuel pressure we have to make sure we can keep the injection pump adequately supplied with fuel to prevent cavitation, we always install a FASS Fuel System when we are modifying a DPF equipped truck. There are several reasons we use the FASS but fuel supply is the main reason. To read more on FASS Fuel Systems READ HERE. Most people associate an aftermarket cold air intake with better performance and fuel economy, and its true. An aftermarket cold air intake for your diesel truck is always going to help increase your trucks efficiency. Its not going to increase fuel economy 3 or 4 miles per gallon like some manufacturers would like you to believe, but there is a mile per gallon to be had there. So for 2. 89 S B Intakes makes a cold air intake for every diesel truck on the road. It will pay itself off in a couple of months. HERE IS A CLOGGED INTAKE FROM AN LMM DURAMAX BEFORE WE INSTALLED THE WATER METHANOL ON THE TRUCKLets get one thing out of the way right now. DPF back exhaust systems are a joke I cant tell you how many people have bought one online and then called me up to yell at me because it didnt change the sound of their truck and they didnt get better mileage. REALLY The DPF is what makes your truck quiet, the DPF is what is killing your fuel economy. Hooking up a bigger pipe to the back of the DPF is not going to change anything except the way the tail pipe looks. So if you want a better looking exhaust then buy one, but dont waste your money on a DPF back exhaust system thinking it is going to change anything else on your truck. The single most important factor that is going to make your truck perform better is a Water Methanol Injection System. The methanol helps the diesel fuel to achieve a more complete burn so there is no heavy soot going through the exhaust. It also helps to cool the engine down and lower the exhaust gas temperatures. One of the best features though is the fact that the water methanol is injected into the intake elbow or manifold which cleans any old EGR soot out of the engine. It also keeps the intake clean for the lifespan of the truck. To read more about Water Methanol Injection see my review on that. So with the lift pump, the tuner, the cold air intake and the water methanol installed your truck will be getting better mileage than a stock 5. L Cummins that didnt have emissions systems. You arent doing anything illegal and your truck should rarely go through a regen cycle if it does at all. A few local trucks we have done here in Washington state have reported that it has been over a year since their last regen with these parts installed.
